MADISON - Scott Fitzgerald — the Republican state Senate majority leader running for Congress — criticized President Donald Trump on Tuesday for calling the impeachment process a lynching.

"That's a terrible word," Fitzgerald told reporters. "I would never use that word and I wish that the president hadn't used that because I think it's unfortunate."

The Juneau Republican said he considered House Democrats' impeachment inquiry a "witch hunt" — a favorite phrase of the president.

Fitzgerald is running to replace Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, who is not seeking re-election.

Fitzgerald was responding to a message Trump posted on Twitter on Tuesday that said, "All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here — a lynching."
