After four days of hearing the trial and more than 13 hours of deliberation, a 12-person jury was unable to reach a decision Friday in the trial of Harley R. Est, which was ruled a mistrial by Judge Anna L Becker.

Est was tried for first degree reckless homicide and delivery of drugs for the 2015 death of Vernell Pugh. Before the trial, it was believed that Est shot Pugh up with heroin while he slept, but new testimony heard during the trial revealed that it was more likely Est setup a line of heroin for him.

The autopsy revealed three needle marks in Pugh’s arm. Brenda Hentsch, an ER tech at Black River Memorial Hospital, said she placed an IV in Pugh.
