Jackson County Historical Society


With a call to duty in 1898, this solider in the Spanish-American war headed south to serve his county. Perhaps this noble citizen of Jackson County rode along side Teddy Roosevelt up San Juan Hill.

  	This photograph shows a recently mown hayfield from around 1912 on a Springfield farm. The fresh hay bales will soon be stored in the barn in the background to be used during the winter on this farm located just outside Taylor.

With one of his cattle looking on, a Swedish farmer stands in front of his homestead in Cleveland. With fertile flat land, many immigrants came to Jackson county to try their hand at farming.

This picture gives a glimpse into the life of farmers in the early 20th century in Jackson County. With winter fast approaching, this farmer loads feed into a stone silo for the winter months ahead. While still using horses and manual power to pull his equipment.

This photograph shows two Native American women wearing traditional dresses. Notice the intricate patterns on their shawls.

Ho-Chunk Women
Located in the logging town of Clay, the Wagner family poses in front of their store, which also was the location of the post office in the region.

With many visitors arriving daily on trains, lodging was very important to the Merrillan of yesteryear. Many of those visitors stayed at the William Miller Hotel located in Merrillan.

With war breaking out in Europe in 1914, the United States began to mobilize in 1917. Gathered outside Black River Falls, we see a group of soldiers marching off to battle. Without a doubt, many did not march back.

World War I
The World War II Memorial Monument located in Black River Falls stood as a reminder of the many who died in World War II. Although it no longer exists, the citizens of Jackson County still appreciate the accomplishments of its soldiers.
