Warm summer and early fall days meant a lot of work for this farm family gathering hay for the coming winter. Notice their two "horsepower" tractors.

In this photo from 1908 we see the dedication of the Hatfield dam, creating Lake Arbutus, providing recreation, safety, and water for residents of Jackson County.

As was often the case with small towns in the Midwest, the general store and post office were located in one building, making it considerably easier to run errands, especially with the rutted roads visible in front of the general store.

Hixton General Store
In another example of two buildings located very close to each other, is the Hixton Hotel and Church of rural Hixton. This photograph taken in the winter of 1910 shows the rather unique combination of a church and hotel located within the same block.

This picture provides an extraordinary look into the meeting of the past and the future. This photograph shows the last pair of oxen in Hixton right next to an automobile. While this may seem trivial today, at the time it signified a dramatic shift toward

Building a new barn in yesteryear was a difficult and time consuming job, but thankfully whole communities would chip in to make it go faster. Here we see a barn raising just south of the village of Irving.

Here we see the Irving General Store located in the village of Irving during the early 20th century. Notice the lack of roads leading to the drugstore.

Here we see the Jackson County Courthouse, built in 1878. Although it no longer has the steeple , this building is an important part of Black River history.

Located in the central region of Brockway, the Lakes Hotel was often patronized by visitors to Black River Falls and the surrounding area. Standing in front of the hotel is one of the patrons, ready to ride his horse down to Melrose to visit family.
