A Sheboygan tax preparer defrauded the IRS of nearly $500,000 by helping undocumented immigrants claim tax refunds based on claims of dependents actually living in Mexico, and other false information, according to federal court records.
Lesley E. Anzures, 35, who operated Lesley's Tax Service on 8th St. in downtown Sheboygan, has agreed to plead guilty to a single count of structuring a financial transaction. As part of the deal, prosecutors will recommend the maximum prison term of three years, and Anzures will be ordered to pay restitution of $496,533. The offense also carries a possible $100,000 fine.
Anzures is scheduled to enter the plea in federal court Feb. 27.
The charge involves one man's 2010 return that netted a refund of $3,772 when he actually owed $1,156. The return listed six dependents for the man, but five of them lived in Mexico and could not be legally claimed on the man's tax return.
