Mary L. Stecha, 86, of Holmen died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at her home.
She was born Sept. 18, 1927, in La Crosse, to Fred and Mary (La Fleur) Bahnub. Mary began her life in La Crosse, and grew up on a farm in Disco. She was a proud graduate of the 1945 class of Black River Falls High. From 1945-46 she worked at Ft. McCoy. She married George H. Stecha March 21, 1959. Then as a military wife, she had the opportunity to travel in the U. S. and Europe. In 1979, she returned to her beloved Wisconsin (except in the winter). For many years she was a greeter at Walmart. So many people were treated to her sparkling blue eyes and wit.
Mary is survived by five children, Gayle Peters of Littleton, Colo. Charlene Moak of Phoenix, Ore. Jay (Vergie) Stecha of Arcadia, Dan Stecha of Tampa, Fla. and Michele (Roger) Duvic of Slidell, La. nine grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; and siblings, Dean Bahnub, Gordon Bahnub and Lois Powell.
Joint graveside services will be held for both Mary and her husband, George, who passed away in February 2013, at 2 p. m. Monday, Sept. 15, at the Green Mound Cemetery in Holmen. Full military honors will be given to Lt. Colonel George Stecha.

8/13/14) The 7th U-S Court of Appeals rules Wisconsin can enforce its photo I-D requirements for people wanting to cast ballots in the November elections.
The federal appeals court in Chicago handed down its decision just a few hours after the three-judge panel heard arguments on putting the challenged law back into force. Wisconsin's top election official, Kevin Kennedy, says the state is communicating with local election officials right now. More details will be sent to them and to registered voters next week. Governor Scott Walker calls the appeals court decision a victory for the state, saying the requirement of a photo I-D to vote is a common-sense reform.
8/13/14) An early morning explosion levels a Genoa home.
According to the La Crosse Tribune, it happened around 6:00 when Roger Beck, a commercial fisherman, was in his driveway preparing his boat to check his nets in the Mississippi River. Beck heard a small explosion, saw it was his kitchen, tried to douse the flames with a bucket, and while walking away the rest of the home exploded. The incident remains under investigation.
