Public Safety Committee Minutes of September 17, 2008 Print E-mail

The Public Safety Committee met at City Hall in the City of Black River Falls on September 17, 2008 at 8:00 P.M.  Alderpersons Rahmlow, Austin, Mathews, R. Eddy and Olson were present.

1. Rick Tumaniec, a State Department of Transportation employee and City resident, expressed concern over the traffic situation at the corner of Main and Eighth Streets in the City. There have been 15 accidents in the last few years, several with injuries. There is a highway improvement project scheduled for 2013 so now would be the time to study the situation and propose any changes. The first step would be to have a vehicle count done. The City will get a quote for the vehicle count and proceed from there.

2. Dr. Don Delebo discussed the possibility of some type of traffic control for pedestrians at the corner of Main and 5th Streets in the City. This will be coordinated with the traffic study above.

3. It was moved by Alderperson Olson, seconded by Alderperson Mathews that at the corner of Main and North Tenth Streets for westbound traffic to designate the left lane a left turn and through lane with the right lane being a right turn only lane. There will be a sign as well as pavement markings. Motion carried.

4. Chairperson Rahmlow discussed the traffic situation at South Water and Fillmore Streets.

5. Police Chief Don Gilberg presented his September 2008 report including budget, case load, current events and personnel. A proposed 2009 budget was also presented.

6. The Committee discussed adding a line item to cover the cost of special events such as parades and road races. Chief Gilberg will figure proposed costs and add this to his budget.

7.  Fire Chief Steve Schreiber presented his proposed 2009 budget.

8. Black River Emergency Medical Services (BREMS) Division Chief Brad Chown reviewed his September 2008 report to the Committee.

9. The proposed 2009 budget for the BREMS was presented.

10. It was moved by Alderperson Olson, seconded by Alderperson R. Eddy to adjourn. Motion carried.
