MADISON… Taxpayers will start seeing their economic stimulus payments soon. According to State Representative
Terry Musser (R-Melrose) the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has scheduled the first rebate checks for direct deposit on May 2nd. The first paper checks are to be mailed out by May 16.
Musser contacted the IRS and the WI Department of Revenue who assured him they have no plans to tax these rebates as income. The IRS has been receiving so many calls regarding the rebate checks, 50,000 more than normal each day, they are reassigning more than 1,500 employees from other duties to man the phone lines. Here’s a quick update on how the issuing process should work.
Most individuals will be getting around $600, $1200 for couples filing jointly, and $300 per child. To calculate how much you should expect you can visit http://www.irs.gov.
Social security numbers are being used to determine the order in which the rebates are issued. Those who opted for direct deposit on tax returns will be the first to get their checks. If the last two digits of your social security number are between 00 and 20 your rebate should be deposited on May 2nd, 21 through75 on May 9th, and 76 through 99 on May 16th.
Rebates by paper check will be mailed between May 16th and July 11th. To see the date your check will be sent by you can visit http://www.irs.gov.
Musser added that if you filed your taxes after April 15th, you may see a delay in receiving your rebate check. You must file your taxes by October 15th in order to be eligible for a stimulus payment this year. A small number of returns may require additional time to process and this may delay the payment as well.
Representative Musser welcomes your views on this or any state issue and may be contacted at State Capitol - Room 11 West, Madison WI 53702, 1-888-534-0092 or
