Remember Our Veterans – Sunday, November 11th, 2007 Print E-mail

MADISON …. Veterans Day is a day proclaimed to honor America's veterans, living and dead, for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. According to State Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose), the day is always on November 11th , this year a Sunday, and was set aside to remind Americans of the sacrifices that our men and women continue to make so we can live in a free country.

Veteran’s benefits in Wisconsin are among the best in the nation. The new State budget maintained the Wisconsin G.I. Bill tuition remission program for veterans.  The UW and the Wisconsin Technical systems must remit 100% of tuition, for up to 128 credits or eight semesters, whichever is longer, to qualified veterans   Spouses, the unremarried surviving spouse, or the children of certain veterans also may qualify for the tuition remission.

Musser, who chairs the Assembly Veterans & Military Affairs Committee, said his budget amendment to expand the Wisconsin Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit was approved.  In 2009 the current age limit will be removed and the residency requirement will be reduced to five continuous years of state residency. The  disabled veterans determined to be Individually Unemployable (IU) will also be eligible for the credit.

Musser, a two tour Vietnam Veteran, explained that the Aid to Needy Veterans grant program was revised and the maximum amount that may be provided annually for the subsistence aid grants increased from $2,000 to $3,000.   The lifetime maximum for assistance to needy veterans increased from $5,000 to $7,500. There are no longer specific amounts for vision, dental and hearing care within the program.

Musser urged everyone to take a minute, and remember those who answered the call to arms in generations past and extend a thank you to anyone who has served or is currently serving in the armed forces.  In light of the current war going on they are very near us:  members of our families, our friends and our neighbors.

Representative Musser welcomes your views on this or any state issue and may be contacted at State Capitol - Room 11 West, Madison WI  53702, 1-888-534-0092 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it    More Information on all veterans’ benefits is available  http://dva.state.wi.us.
