Madison…….. Legislation has been proposed in the WI State Assembly to shed more light on state government spending. According to State Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose), it’s time for the government to try harder to make it clear where the money goes.
Musser said, “Especially at this time of year, when we’re thinking about tax forms and how much the government takes out of our paychecks, I would like citizens to be able at least to know what the state does with it.”
The bill, called the Government Checkbook Disclosure Act, is modeled after successful programs in ten other states. The information would be in addition to Wisconsin’s Contract Sunshine website, focusing on contracts awarded by our state government.
Musser explained that Assembly Bill 862, which he has cosponsored, provides that all state agency expenditures for state operations over $100, including salaries and fringe benefits paid to state agency employees, would be avaailable for inspection on a searchable internet web site. Information relating to state agency grants and contracts would also be available for inspection on an internet web site.
Musser added that AB 862 already has bi-partisan support in the state legislature, and he expects to have it come up for vote in the very near future.
Representative Musser welcomes your views on this or any state issue. He may be contacted at
