Musser Votes to Pass Budget Repair Bill Print E-mail

MADISON … The State of Wisconsin is currently looking at a budget deficit that would reach $416 million by the end of the next fiscal year, says Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose). The Assembly passed a budget repair bill late last Wednesday night in an attempt to fix the problem.

"It solves the deficit responsibly, without putting more of a burden on Wisconsin taxpayers," said Musser. The bill addresses the deficit by cutting back government spending rather than raising taxes. It requires the WI Department of Administration to cut $250 million in spending, takes $100 million from state reserves, and moves back a school aid payment a couple weeks in order to save $125 million.

According to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau, the deficit was caused by state personal and corporate income taxes, and sales tax revenues being lower than expected, due mostly to the slowing economy.

The Assembly’s budget repair bill is in response to the Governor’s proposed plan, which included bringing back the hospital tax, and transferring $243 million from the state’s transportation fund. While the two proposed solutions differ greatly, Musser believes a compromise which fixes the deficit responsibly, can be reached in the near future.
