Madison…Wisconsin taxpayers have an opportunity to take advantage of a free service that will make income tax filing just a little easier. According to State Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose), if your adjusted gross income was $54,000 or less in 2007, the Wisconsin Department of Revenue is offering a free service to help you file your state income tax returns.
Many people choose to purchase commercial tax software, but the State’s free program, FreeFile, is just as easy and can save both time and money. The benefits of FreeFile extend beyond the ability to file for free. Filing state income taxes electronically can also result in faster returns, security, and accuracy – the program automatically checks for accuracy and notifies the filer if there’s a problem.
Wisconsin Free-File provides free electronic filing of only your Wisconsin state income tax return, provided you meet certain requirements. For example, you cannot have certain business income, use certain schedules, or claim non-cash donations of more than $500.
When using FreeFile, you can choose to deposit your refund directly into a checking or savings account. If you owe, payments can be made electronically by credit or debit card as well as by check or money order.

A reminder – be sure to file your income tax before April 15, 2008 in order to avoid having to file a federal extension with the IRS.
