Musser Details Digital Changeover Print E-mail

MADISON… We are now less than a year away from the digital transition, where all television broadcasts will change to a digital signal, reports State Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose). The official date of the changeover is February 17, 2009.

The digital transition will provide consumers with a clearer picture, more programming choices, and will free up the analog channels for emergency first responders.

Musser encourages people to prepare for the change, so they don’t experience an interruption in service. If you are currently connected to cable, satellite, or other paid television service you shouldn’t be affected by the changeover.

You may be affected by the transition if,

  • You receive any channels through “rabbit ears” or an antenna,
  • AND You do not have a TV with a digital tuner or a digital converter box.

If this applies to you, you have three options in order to prepare for the transition:

  • Connect to cable, satellite, or other paid television service;
  • Replace your current television with a TV that has a digital tuner;
  • Keep your current TV and purchase a digital converter box.

The U.S. Department of Commerce is offering coupons that may be used towards the purchase of a digital converter box. Each household may request two coupons, which are worth $40 each. Digital converter boxes generally run between $40 and $70. You can apply for a coupon online at their website (www.dtv2009.gov), call the coupon program hotline at 1-888-DTV-2009, or print an application from the website and mail it to PO Box 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000. A list of participating retailers (most places that sell TVs) is provided when the coupons are mailed.

Representative Musser welcomes your views on this or any state issue and may be contacted at State Capitol - Room 11 West, Madison WI 53702, 1-888-534-0092 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
