MADISON…A bill is on its way to the Governor’s desk which would allow more types of ID to be used when purchasing alcohol. According to State Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose), the bill makes sense and he expects the Governor to sign it into law in the near future.
Currently, the only acceptable form of id is a Department of Transportation (DOT) issued state driver’s license, an identification card issued by the DOT, or a certain identification card issued through the Department of Administration before January 1, 1990. The bill would expand the acceptable forms of id to include a valid military identification card (which must contain the person’s photograph and birth date) and a valid U.S. passport.
Places where alcohol is sold will still be permitted to refuse service to someone if their identification doesn’t appear to be valid, authentic or if it looks as if it has been altered.
Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose) was a co-sponsor of the bill and supported it when it was passed by the Assembly in October of last year. The bill has now passed though both houses of the legislature and will become law if the Governor signs it.
Representative Musser welcomes your views on this or any state issue and may be contacted at State Capitol - Room 11 West, Madison WI 53702, 1-888-534-0092 or
