MADISON…….Wisconsin cell phone users will see a more than 50% reduction in the monthly E-911 surcharge, State Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose) announced today. The surcharge of 92 cents per month will be reduced to 43 cents per month. This surcharge funds the state’s Wireless Enhanced 911 program.
The Wireless Enhanced 911, or E-911, is a program that allows emergency personnel to find the exact location of a 911 wireless caller. Often, these callers are either unaware of their exact location, or too sick or injured to let the 911 dispatcher know where they are.
Musser said, “It’s an important program and now we can pay less and still know emergency workers will be able to find us with this technology.”
The program began in 2004 and is funded by the surcharge. Successful rescues due to this technology have been reported from all over the state since then. Especially in a state like WI where so many enjoy outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and snowmobiling, citizens can feel free to explore and still have the peace of mind that they will be able to receive help even if they don’t know exactly where they are.
According to Representative Musser, “Since more of us have cell phones now, we can all pay a little less for this service.”
Representative Musser welcomes your views on this or any state issue and may be contacted at State Capitol - Room 11 West, Madison WI 53702, 1-888-534-0092 or
