Badgercare Plus Given Federal Approval Print E-mail

MADISON ….Wisconsin has been granted federal approval for BadgerCare Plus, which will allow every Wisconsin family to buy affordable and complete health care coverage for children. According to State Representative Terry Musser (R-Melrose), with the federal approval, Wisconsin can expand BadgerCare by combining funds from Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and simplify enrollment.

BadgerCare Plus will offer access to comprehensive, affordable health care to children, working families and pregnant women in Wisconsin. The program will be available on February 1, 2008.

Musser explained that BadgerCare Plus will have two benefit plans based on income, the Standard Plan and the Benchmark Plan.  Monthly premiums range from $10.00 to $68.25 per month, depending on annual income per household.

Musser pointed out that under the Standard Plan, co-payments for health care services will range from $.50 to $3.00 with some exceptions. The new Benchmark Plan is for families with higher incomes and self-employed families, including farm families. Co-payments for health care services under the Benchmark Plan will range from $5.00 for prescription drugs and $100.00 for a hospital stay. With either plan there are no co-payments for well child checkups (HealthCheck) or other preventive services.

Anyone currently enrolled in family Medicaid, BadgerCare, or Healthy Start, will be enrolled automatically. Those enrolled in an HMO now will not have to change the HMO.

Beginning in February, 2008, community-based organizations across Wisconsin will be assisting with enrollment in BadgerCare Plus. Additional information is available at http://www.badgercareplus.org.
