Jackson County has some of the most popular ATV trails in the Midwest. Over 100 miles of trails wind through the scenic Black River State Forest and Jackson County Forest. All trails are clearly marked. No "off-trail" riding is permitted in Jackson County.

Three elk calves recently were born in the acclimation pen in the Black River State Forest – a welcome milestone in the reintroduction project.Scott Roepke, a Wisconsin Department of Resources wildlife biologist, said three calves were born from three cows between June 6 and June 13 and all are doing well in their early days in their Jackson County environment.“All the calves are doing good so far. They’re hanging out with mom and getting used to their life in the pen,” Roepke said.“It’s a bonus to have three calves born.”The births are the first since a group of elk arrived in Jackson County after being trapped and transported from Kentucky.
