Madison, WI – Representative Mark Radcliffe (D – Black River Falls) today pushed for a creation of a special committee to investigate wasteful and/or unnecessary State Government spending, and cost saving measures.
“One year ago, after being sworn into the State Assembly, I had made this request based upon my contact with several government employees that told me about wasteful and/or unnecessary spending that they saw in the departments that they worked in, or who had cost saving ideas.”
“Now, having completed my first year in office, I have come to understand that there is a culture in several state agencies here in Wisconsin that discourages employees from coming forward with complaints about what they see as wasteful practices within their agency.”
“The formation of the committee I have suggested will allow confidential and meaningful discourse between the employees of state agencies and the legislative branch, which is charged with providing a budget to these departments.”
“The committee’s goals will be to visit each state department, communicate to all state employees the purpose of the committee, open a confidential means for all state employees to communicate with the committee without fear of reprisal, listen to and investigate all claims and/or ideas brought to the committee’s attention, and then make findings and recommendations to the legislative branch as a whole.”
“I have seen firsthand the difficulty in dealing with state agencies in my fight to consolidate the State Troopers and the DNR Rangers at the Tomah State Patrol Station. This good cost saving idea has been met with much more agency resistance than I could have ever imagined. Given that these departments seem to want to defy a single elected representative, perhaps a committee such as proposed will bring about the change all the taxpayers deserve.”
