The math is simple. There are 1440 minutes in a day and there are a lot of things we can do in 1440 minutes. My challenge to students, of any age or grade, in the 92nd Assembly District is to volunteer your time in any way, in any capacity, in your community for 1440 minutes between now and June 1, 2010 and then let us know that you took up and answered the challenge so we can recognize you for your efforts. My challenge to parents is to motivate, encourage, and help the students in your family to accept and complete the 1440 CHALLENGE.
I read in the local papers and hear from folks in the district all the time about the wonderful spirit of volunteerism that we have here in western Wisconsin. I read and hear about those who help the elderly, our veterans, our Boys & Girls Clubs, our animal shelters, our food pantries, and lots of others in need of a little help, and I see the difference this makes in people’s lives, and not just in those who receive the support but also in those who give it. Getting a young person started in volunteering will give them a lifetime of spirit in helping others.
Volunteering is as simple as shoveling an elderly neighbor’s sidewalk, or collecting canned food for the food pantry, if you drive you can deliver meals to the elderly, you can go to a nursing home and read a book to a resident. If you need ideas you can read your local paper and listen to the local radio and you will read and hear all kinds of things going on that you can volunteer for. You can also ask a parent, ask a teacher, call and ask my office, all can help with ideas. Students can get together with friends and get involved as a group in volunteering.
We would really love to hear about all the great things you are already doing to volunteer and all the great ideas you come up with…just think, 1440 minutes is just one day out of your life, so I challenge you to count your minutes and accept my 1440 CHALLENGE today!
